The sushi here is the best I've had in Richmond! Their sushi has a very very fresh taste and that says a lot about their food as most seafood make a huge difference in how fresh the seafood is. I've tried probably about 15 different things from their menu and all of them have been amazing!

The atmosphere is pretty casual. It's located in a strip mall near other restaurants and clubs. After your done with dinner you can listen to some of the live bands in the area. We chose do sit outside since it was nice out... Getting to the sushi, the service was prompt and the food was decent. They had a good selection of rolls to choose from and the fish was fresh. I'd go there again and would recommend that you try the place.

What a nice find. The room is not much to look at. Nor a place to "be seen", but they can count me as a fan. I sat at the sushi bar and watched and watched. Very entertaining. Very pleasant service - efficient without hovering. The rolls I had were fantastic. Very satisfied when I walked out. As MacArthur once said, "I will return". Me too.

We went there for lunch on a Monday around 12:15 pm. There were three tables when we arrived. We told the waitress we needed to be back at the office before 1 pm. She said she didn't think so. I couldn't believe it but since my colleague highly recommended this place I didn't want to say no in front of him, so we told her we could make our food togo. We didn't get our togo order until 1:00 pm, and a different table also complaint that they had been waiting for an hour for their food. When I finally was able to eat my food I found it not impressive at all. I ordered a shrimp tempura lunch bento box. Normally it comes with California roll, appetizer, and a side. Mine only came with soup, salad, white rice, and two pieces of shrimp shoumai. So to summarize, food was so so, not good value for the price, kitchen was SUPER SLOW, service was average.

My wife and I have hit almost every sushi joint in the RVA area. Umi is good but too expensive, and the dark atmosphere is not cool. Sticky Rice is great, but parking can be tough, and they are inconsistent with their quality. Enter this place. This is the best sushi we have EVER had in the RVA area, and the prices are rock bottom. This is our new favorite, and we will be back...OFTEN! Did I mention cheep beer? Win, win, WIN!!!

Overall good experience waiter was attentive and always made sure your glass was full. Had the Kani salad which was light and refreshing. Soy sauce was a major plus being homemade! Ordered chirashi as main entree and it was colorful and tasted good wished there was a little more fish. But will be back to try more!

I really wanted to give this place another 5 star review but on my most recent visit, it did not match my standards on previous visits. There is always two waitresses working the entire restaurant so the service can be a little on the slow side. We came on a Friday night for a late dinner around 8PM and this restaurant was about 75% full. There is only ONE sushi Chef here and in the past, the rolls I have gotten have been spectacular. I decided to get something different this time and only get Sashimi as my entree. I got the miso soup it was actually very flavorful and tasted home made and not with MSG. It actually took awhile for that to come out which I thought would be pre made or something. For my entree, I got the Sashimi Deluxe (dinner portion) which came with salmon, tuna, and I think red Snapper and yellow tail. Three generous slices for each kind of fish. some of the fish was actually still cold/slight icy on the inside unfortunately.. I prefer to have mine served at room temperature or slightly colder. The cold sashimi was an instant turn off for me. The salmon tasted great but the other cuts were just average. Price is a little on the higher side compared to other sushi spots in town but I think you're paying for a better quality but on my recent visit, the quality was lacking. I'll definitely come back again but will stick to the hand rolls for sure.

Eh. I won't be back. The sashimi was a little hard. I did love the ginger dressing on the salad and the place was immaculately clean. Good place for a quick lunch but not a must try place.

Overpriced garbage! They hide the poor quality of their fish with tons of sauces and mayo's, fried stuff and "crabstick". I was very surprised at the high reviews on this place. I guess folks just don't know good sushi. Oh, and thanks for the county tax, was a nice surprise on the bill. Now I know why this place was totally empty.

I have been to so many Sushi places both in west end and Midlothian area. Trying places that people recommend as having the best sushi. Well, I come back to Hanami every time as they have THE BEST sushi I have ever had. Try their specialty rolls, especially the Butterfly roll. The owner is the master of all masters. Thanks Hanami!

I've tried the regular rolls as well as the sushi, and I can confidently say that if you do not eat their sushi, you are missing out. The sushi is fresh and delicious. The rice is just slightly sweet and the combination of their soy sauce, the fresh fish, and rice just melts in your mouth. It's great. I've had the salmon, yellowtail, red snapper, and white tuna sushi and all of it was fantastic. My mouth is watering just thinking of it.

Before you go any further in this review, I'm going to save you some time. This is the best sushi restaurant in Richmond. If anyone who has been here says otherwise, write them off as tasteless rubes who should probably stick to some of the local abominations in the west end (I'm looking at you Sushi King. Yuck.) Would you like to know more? Oh, I'll tell you more. This is a family owned and operated hole in the wall tucked in the corner of the little center near Capital Ale House in Innsbrook. There is very little going on inside as far as decor goes, but that means absolutely nothing to me as long as the food is good. This place isn't fancy by any stretch of the imagination. I can't remember what we ordered the first time. I just remember it being the best sushi I had ever had. Since then we've settled on a few favorites, but just about everything is amazing. The butterfly roll, which is a shrimp tempura/crab salad roll with a citrus sauce, and a drop of sriracha on top. If someone told me that I would only be allowed one meal to eat forever for the rest of my life I honestly would be perfectly okay with this being it. The birthday roll, which is a variety of raw tuna, thin slices of avocado, over a roll with fried oysters, is probably my second favorite. I had never tasted fried oysters in sushi before, but it is absolutely delicious. They also make their own soy sauce, which is better than anything I've ever tasted. I wish they bottled and sold it, but sadly that's not something they offer yet. The service has always been spot on every time we've went no matter how packed the restaurant was. Soups and appetizers came out incredibly fast, and the turnaround time from ordering to the sushi arriving at the table is very fast. But that's not the most important part of the service in my eyes. The following is. My girlfriend is Chinese and the owners are Taiwanese. On one of our last visits we decided to sit at the bar and watch Victor, the chef, do his thing. I don't speak Chinese so I asked her to translate what Victor and his wife were saying as they were working. The number one thing they talked to one another and to the servers about as meals were going out and empty plates were coming back was whether or not people seemed like they were really enjoying the food. They would send out a plate of five rolls (a massive amount of food) to two people, and get concerned when they couldn't finish the whole thing. "Did they not like it? Was it not to their taste? Which did they like best?" were constantly being asked. They put a lot of love into their food and it really shows. Two nights ago we went for my birthday, and when they found out that it was a special occasion they brought out two types of desserts. I can't remember the names of them, but one could be best described as ice cream wrapped in a marshmallow. I had no idea such a thing existed, but it was awesome. After we were done with that, Victor quickly ran back to the kitchen and brought out a small bowl of home made ice cream that he puts together with some Taiwanese flower they have imported from overseas. To make ice cream. Delicious! With how many boring and bland sushi restaurants there are in Richmond this is an absolute gem. Amazing food made by wonderful people who care deeply about every patrons complete satisfaction. There aren't enough stars I could give Hanami, so please give it a try. You will not be disappointed.

Delicious sushi, green tea, homemade soy sauce, and seafood soup. The rice is seasoned so nicely you don't really need soy sauce, but if you wanted more flavor, the homemade sauce isn't too over powering. The fish is fresh and the regular rolls are eight pieces and is under $10 a roll. So glad it's next to my hotel, so I'm going to totally stay at this hotel just so I can walk here!

After some hot dogs at Joey's, I decided to get a sushi roll at Hanami since I wasn't full yet. I didn't have much time, so I just quickly ordered, ate, and paid for a roll. The service was friendly, the restaurant was pretty, and the food was fine. There is lots on the menu! I would love to come back to enjoy a proper meal here in the future. P.S. The owners/employees seem to be Taiwanese! I haven't seen many Taiwanese people in Richmond, so it was fun hearing their conversations. =)

It's a shame that a sushi place with great food is marred by the long wait to get said food. We like to come here, its a family run restaurant and we get how hard it is to balance hired help and service. I think mom and dad must be the sushi makers, they seemed overwhelmed by the orders. The place looks moderately busy tonight for Friday. We've been waiting almost an hour to get our sushi. It's a shame. We probably won't be back due to this experience tonight.

Pretty good little sushi place. Very friendly staff. They had amazing homemade ginger dressing with their salad. They also had homemade soy sauce which wasn't as salty as I normally like but probably better for you. The only reason for 3 stars is I caught them on a slow night and my chef's choice sashimi (which looked stunning) had some pieces that were still slightly frozen. Doh.

I enjoyed hanami sushi. I ordered the seaweed salad, Godzilla roll, the spider roll, and Tuna, salmon, and shrimp nigiri (sushi). The salmon sushi was amazing - it literally melted in my mouth. The Godzilla roll came with a lot of extra sauce and I felt that the sauce masked the flavor somewhat. It was a very sweet sauce. I would order it again but I wouldn't bother sliding the sushi through the extra sauce provided on the plate. I did think that their method of using a single plate for each roll was a little wasteful although it allowed for elegant presentation. The menu prices for the sushi weren't accurate. I ended up with a bill about $10 more than I expected. I also thought the interior of the restaurant was somewhat dark and could have used upkeep. In addition, although there was a bar area, it didn't appear open or to be in use. The staff was attentive. I ordered a Cabernet Sauvignon to drink that I wouldn't spend my time on again. All in all i enjoyed this restaurant despite it's somewhat dubious location, and plan to go again.

Nice sushi and friendly staff. I had a lunch special box. For $10 I got miso soup, a couple of small shrimp dumplings, 2 sushi rolls, salad and half an orange. Plenty of food. The miso soup was homemade and tasted good. So did the sushi. The only thing I did not like was the salad with the ginger dressing. I will certainly be back. If I get the lunch special again I will probably just order it and ask for no salad.

My husband and I went to Hanami Sushi last night (Valentine's Day) for the first time. Overall we had a very good experience, but there were some drawbacks. We had reservations for 8:15 PM, when we walked in we were immediately seated, there wasn't really a need for a reservation, though most tables were taken. We figured going out for dinner on Valentine's Day you need to get a reservation even to go to Five Guys. Upon seating us our waitress promptly got our drinks. My husband stuck with iced tea, I got the Hanami tea. The Hanami tea is hot, sweet, and very fruity, my husband likened it to the fruit flavored Thera-flu, and while that's not very flattering, it was pretty accurate. I only had one cup and then just water. We smartly got an appetizer, which was the Kani Miso Soup. This miso soup upgrade had crab stick and some extra veggies in it. Pretty good, but for twice the price of regular miso soup, I don't think it was worth it. If there were real lump crab in there and a larger portion, it'd be a different story. We then waited an hour and forty-five minutes for our sushi. Granted, the place was pretty full when we got there and apparently they were taking take-out orders, we ended up being the last people served before closing. We finally got our food around 10pm but it was honestly the best sushi I've had in Richmond so far. Very worth it. I had the MacArthurs roll and the Black Jack roll. Both of them were delicious and the textures were amazing. I'm an eel girl and I love the crunchies in my sushi so I was in heaven. My husband got the tornado roll and butterfly roll, the latter honestly tasted like a big mac. Both of his were decent but I preferred my own. He enjoyed them thoroughly. Then we both split the Super Duper Roll, which was a little mushy, but that's pretty standard when you're getting spicy tuna. The quality of the fish was outstanding, however the structural integrity of some of the rolls were lacking. I don't really mind as long as it ultimately gets in my belly, but I did have a few pieces fall apart on me. Also their homemade soy sauce was outstanding. I normally hate soy sauce because it's way too salty and theirs was flavorful without being too overwhelming. We got complementary dessert, of mochi ice cream. My husband had the green tea flavor and I the mango. The texture was fascinating, almost like play-doh on the outside and a little muted, but cold, creamy, and very flavorful on the inside. The only drawback to the dessert was the absurd utensil they gave us to eat it with. It was like a toothpick-fork hybrid and it was not at all effective for eating. Chop sticks probably would have fared better. All in all we paid about $70 for our meal. While the service was unbearably slow, the quality of the food and the jovial nature of all the waitstaff made up for it in my opinion. I will most definitely be going back to Hanami Sushi, but I'll make sure I get my fill of appetizers first.

One of the better places in Richmond to get sushi-I'm still searching for the best!! It's always fresh and I love their shrimp shumai. The homemade soy sauce is a nice touch and sets them apart from the other sushi places..I think it really enhances the flavor of everything. I ordered a specialty roll once and it was drowning in sauce, which I didn't enjoy, but other than that the sashimi lunch is a pretty good deal!

Amazing sushi, homemade soy sauce is PHENOMINAL, best sushi in Richmond hands down. Most places I have been ok, but I keep coming back here when I think sushi for dinner, lunch, etc. Great stuff!

Tucked away in the Innsbrook Shoppes, Hanami Sushi is an unassuming restaurant that serves quality sushi. Dropped in on a Thursday night and was immediately impressed at the customer service and the décor (though I could do without the flashing multi-colored lanterns). The interior space is very calming, the bamboo-covered menu is well-presented, and the employees are incredibly professional. Red snapper roll, Spiderman roll, spicy tuna were all excellent; I particular like the sushi with raw fish but the cooked options are great. There are a ton of varieties you are bound to find something the please your sushi palette. Definitely check out this place when you're craving a sushi fix!

Definitely some of the best sushi I've ever had. Everything is so fresh. The homemade sauce combinations on the special rolls are so unique and delicious and really what makes this place stand apart from other sushi places. The Oceanview roll and the Easter roll are my favorites. The mango on the Easter roll combined with what ever is in that magical orange sauce is to die for. The chef has definitely mastered the sauce craft. The homemade soy sauce is so good, I am from Hawaii so biggest fan of aloha soy sauce because it's not as strong and salty, their soy sauce reminds me of home. I've been here several times now and has easily become my favorite sushi place. Have to make a stop every time I'm in RVA.

This place was decent, but I honestly don't get the rave reviews. My sister and I had 5 rolls, and we liked them, but they did not really stand out to us as being anything besides average. Not in a bad way, but nothing special. The spicy scallop roll was pretty good though, that one is my favorite and deserves high marks. But the rest, eh. The decor was simple and cute. Place was kind of empty at a Wednesday evening. The waitress was fine. Overall, average restaurant, decor, service, and food. Worth a try? Maybe. Worth coming back? Probably not.

Went in for dinner tonight and was a little concerned that no one was there. Stayed and ordered against my better judgement. Worst sushi I have ever had! The Gyoza was almost cold. The beef on one of the rolls was somewhere between white and gray. Nothing tasted fresh. Rolls were drenched in sauce, I assume to cover the taste. Will never go back!

Richmond's. Best. Sushi. I was disappointed when Osaka in Short Pump closed and thought I wouldn't be able to find good sushi anymore. I'm far from a sushi expert and only eat rolls with shrimp tempora so I struggled to find a place that meets me where I'm at. That is, until I found Hanami... Went on lunch with a coworker and there was no wait. Server was friendly and food service was quick. I had calamari as an appetizer and it was fabulous. Fresh, crispy and flavorful. I ordered the Power Roll and it was huge and had a great sauce. Overall, great food, great service, and great prices

Was out shopping at CarMax for a new car and needed to get lunch quickly. After doing some quick review reading I decided to go try some West End sushi. Pros: They offered a very good variety of different types of sushi to pick from. They had the traditional (western traditional) offering of tons of mixed fish rolls. Cons: They didn't have many hand roll options. They charge for everything (extra wasabi and ginger!). They don't have a large selection of sashimi options. We ordered a vegetable roll, spicy tuna, special roll (asparagus, salmon, tuna, topped with panko crumbs) and we had salmon roe roll. The presentation of the food was solid and the rolls came out fresh. Overall taste was better than we expected and it was a very good meal. My only knock on the place is lack of sashimi, hand roll selections and it was pretty expensive for what we ordered. However, I would come back when I need a sushi fix in the west end.

For Richmond, the sushi was good. Very quiet and close to the Hilton, this is a great place to eat while on a business trip or to take the family for a nice dinner. The menu focuses on American style sushi (rolls and tempura), although the sashimi was not bad.

So ate here today after searching on Yelp. This is a small restaurant in a strip mall, but the atmosphere was chill and the restaurant clean. Everyone there was pleasant, from my hostess and server to the gentleman who greeted with a nod from behind the prep station who I'm assuming was the owner. I ordered salad, cold sake, and 3 rolls..the Tuna, Spicy Salmon, and they made an Alaskan roll for me even though it wasn't on the menu. The service was great and the sushi very fresh..they even had brown rice which I prefer. Their soy sauce is also homemade. It was so good I even ordered a 4th roll. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because even without the bottle of sake for $12.95 my bill was $32.00. It was mainly from the up charge of $2.00 per roll for the the brown rice. That being said, there are no decent sushi restaurants where I live in Mechanicsville, so I would definitely visit this place again.

The Spider roll was one of the two or three best spiders I've EVER had. The soft shell crab was huge and perfectly cooked. The roll was incredible. I also had a specialty roll, the Butterfly roll which had shrimp tempura and real crab meat, was delicious, too. The Tobikko was solid and the fried shrimp shumai was a nice and tasty appetizer. The service was excellent and friendly. Nice atmosphere. The complete package.

One of our favorite restaurants. Has the typical vibe of a family owned sushi restaurant, a little weird but the sushi and sashimi are to die for. It seems to get better every time. We have tried almost every special roll and have never been disappointed! And they often give 15% off coupons for the future!!

Over the past 2 years I've hit up a lot of sushi places around the Richmond area. Osaka was good, but I really like options on rolls, the traditional items, and not grandiose boats controlling the menu. As a Tuna and Salmon lover, this is where Hanami does an excellent job. Everything from the Sushi, Nigiri, to just about all their specialty rolls melt in your mouth. And their spicy rolls are not overpowering either. The drago, chesapeake, and spider rolls are all really good. I've never done lunch here, but love going here for dinner, because it's quiet, the service is great, and it's never crowded. Often 8-10 of us will sit at a table for 3 hours and get excellent service. And I'm amazed at how fast their chef can turn out the sushi for that many people. Hanami has become a twice monthly visit for myself and co-workers.

Came here after seeing many good reviews on Yelp. The place is also close to my hotel which was a big plus. I ordered the chicken udon. I would consider it to be average. Maybe ordering sushi would have been better a better option?

3.5 stars!! Pretty good! There are many different things to choose from on their menu, including lunch specials with sushi as well as more traditional kitchen dishes. My friend and I decided that we were in the mood for some sushi. We ordered a roll party, which consists of 4 different preset rolls, miso soup, and salad. I believe the rolls were a shrimp tempura roll, spider roll, one roll with eel inside and avocado on top, and another roll with crab meat and salmon on the inside (not exactly sure about that one). They were all very delicious! On the side we ordered another roll called Super Spicy roll. In my opinion, this roll did not live up to its name, but then again i LOVE spicy food. The only downfall was that the rolls were a little soggy on the bottom, I'm assuming from the sauces that were put over top of them. Overall, fish was fresh. The combinations of fishes they put together in their rolls tasted good. Will probably be back again!

About once a week my coworkers make the long trek all the way across Innsbrook... okay, so its actually super convenient, and takes a total of maybe three minutes to walk to... and it is consistently delicious. I recommend the lunch special with two rolls or your choice (there is one that offers three, but two is plenty of food to hold you for the afternoon--and I really like eating). It comes with a big bowl of miso soup and salad with the magical ginger dressing. All for under $10. You really can't beat the sushi quality or cost anywhere in RVA, great deal!

The service was excellent, the sushi was fresh, the prices were reasonable, they make their own soy sauce, who can ask for anything more at a sushi restaurant. Hanami is a family owned sushi restaurant where the minute you walk thought the doors, you feel welcome. The deco is nice, there was no wait the evening we went. We are super happy we'd found this place! We will definitely be back.

I had the kids with me and we were starving while waiting in line picking up our packets for Color Me Rad 2014!!! We decided to find something to eat and ran into this hole in the wall place, it was actually really good!!! A lot of food and pricing was pretty normal...Service was cordial and quick, if I find myself back down that way it will probably be part of my stop...

I came to Hanami with high expectatons after reading the reviews. This is what my bf and I ordered and how we rated each. Oceanview roll: 3/5 Butterfly roll: 2/5 Volcano roll: 1/5 Super spicy roll: 5/5 Volcano roll tasted so bland. It was very disapointing. Otherwise service was good, restaurant is not as visually appealing as some but I don't mind that as long as the food is good. Overall I would say the sushi was good, I probably will be back to try some other rolls.

Don't waste your time-literally! The sushi is ok-the atmosphere is cafeteria like. But worst of all is the 80 minutes! it took to get lunch. 2 of us, ordered straight from the menu and it wasn't that busy. We were offered extra water and plenty of excuses. Food and management not worth the time. And I'm a very forgiving patron so you know it was bad.....

Fresh sushi. I was there last night and seem to be the last customers there. Even though it's very late, the waiter is still so nice. I had the tuna roll and seaweed salad roll which are delicious and fresh. I am a huge fan of them. Thanks a lot

I'm not from Richmond, so I can't say if this is the best or worst sushi in town. I ordered the chirashi (my fave) and it was presented in the most unique manner I've ever had it. If you haven't had chirashi, it's sashimi (raw fish) placed on top of sushi rice in a bowl. Here, the rice was on the side with a serving of sashimi. The fish was fresh but this is going to sound odd. The way it was served just made the eating experience of chirashi not right. There is something about being able to take your sashimi and scoop the rice directly underneath it. Also, it didn't have roe in the chirashi and I think that makes a difference. The roe adds that saltiness that binds the dish together. Lastly, although my service was prompt, my waitress looked like she had the energy of the chopsticks I was using. Absolutely no energy or happiness in her soul. That's a downer for me too.

My husband heard of this place from a co-worker and I had been in the mood for sushi so we went here after running errands on a Monday evening. Stuck in the left corner area of Innsbrook, sandwiched by dive bars it seems, Hanami Sushi has an unassuming exterior. Once you walk through the glass doors, the space opens up to a calm and open dining space with the sushi bar right in the middle and the sushi chef eager to greet you. We were one of three tables that came through during our time there so service was attentive and helpful. We started with an order of edamame, which was perfectly hot and salty and a generous portion compared to other places I've been. We then decided to order a California roll and the New York roll. From my memory, the California had cucumber, avocado, and crabstick. The New York roll had shrimp tempura with crunch and avocado, topped with spicy tuna, eel, and eel sauce. I had just had Sushi O the week before and the comparison was night and day. The sushi was soft and tasted delicious, the fish was as fresh as I've had it, and the shrimp tempura was light battered and fried the way it should be. One of the best highlights was trying their homemade soy sauce, which blows any other soy sauce I've had out of the water in terms of flavor without too much sodium. After devouring the rolls, we ordered the Spicy Beach roll to finish our dinner. It included spicy tuna, spicy shrimp, spicy salmon, and maybe avocado to the best of my knowledge but it was just as good. We left feeling pleasantly full and satisfied as the tab was still under $30 for all of the sushi we ate. I highly encourage people to come here and give this place the attention it deserves, especially if you've been looking for a Japanese restaurant that focuses on the food and not on frills.

This place is across the street from my office so I've stopped in a few times for lunch. The sushi is OK and is reasonably priced. There are other joints nearby that outperform this place, but its not offensive in any way. Just don't expect to be blown away. I do like the option for outdoor seating as not too many sushi spots in the area offer that.

I don't know why some reviews gave it so much love? the service was OK, and food was below average. None of the sushi item or lunchbox seems outstanding than what I had in other places. Will not go back.

Great sushi, reasonably priced. Great miso soup and salads. I had the sashimi regular and the portions were great and the fish was fresh. My daughter had the rainbow roll, tuna, salmon and eel, all of which she devoured. I prefer hole in the wall places that focus more on the food than on the decor so this place is right up my alley.

Recently, I agreed with another reviewer that said if you are truly to judge a sushi place, stick with the basics and see if they distinguish themselves. The special rolls, while good for pictures, don't always make a difference unless you are trying to impress a date with how much money you can spend. So with that in mind, I must say that Hanami does a terrific job with the basic sushi derivatives as well as their higher priced "artistic" creations. After I watched "Jiro Dreams Of Sushi" (just view the trailer to see how seriously sushi is taken in Japan) and really got an appreciation for this craft and it's centuries-old tradition, I really tried to get inside the head, mind, and stomach of who makes this stuff. What are they most proud of? What sets them apart from the other restaurants that serve this? If you ask a waiter or waitress, they'll tell you. They will also tell you what is fresh, what is best suited to your palate and what, on that day, you may want to avoid. For them, there is no honor in pushing the slow-moving stuff. Hanami came closest so far in Richmond to what I experienced in Japan, even at a "chain" sushi restaurant in the Shibuya section of town, it's really like a familial atmosphere, where fish is eaten one piece at a time, and when a cooler came in with fresh fish, there was no doubt that you needed to order another round of tuna rolls, right then and there. I believe that to be true about most of the decent places I have eaten sushi, the proof is in the ingredients and the care the creators take. In the food at Hanami, you taste the care and feel satisfied that this chef and his understudies understand what is necessary to make his food stand above the rest. To the other things we got, appetizers like the shrimp shumai and tempura were also delicious, as well as the special Kani Miso soup with crab. So, foodies dragging kids and the less adventurous shouldn't fear. But, for those looking for the real deal, and can't get to Ginza Station in Tokyo and spend upwards of 500 dollars for a seat in his train station restaurant, happily, there is Hanami. Enjoy!

I just realized that I've been recommending this place to coworkers for weeks but haven't even written a review for my Yelp friends. Sorry about that! Hanami Sushi is my favorite sushi restaurant in Richmond. I've been here a few times, and every time I marvel at how good it is. Incredibly fresh, very innovative, and terrific depth of flavors! They have many rolls that are unique from what I've seen and elements like spicy tuna actually has some spice--go figure. I am, by no means, a sushi expert, but I've eaten it enough times to know what makes my eyes roll back in my head and what makes my eyes go cross-eyed. This is the eyes-rolled-back place. Everyone is always very welcoming and friendly, unlike many of the lunch places in this shopping center. I believe the owner is also the sushi chef, and he must be a master when I think of the presentations he builds. I work nearby but, sadly, live on the other side of town or this would definitely be my weekly sushi dinner jaunt. Hey, do sushi places do take out? It's a dumb question but takeout might be my solution to having the best sushi I know of while watching last night's Daily Show from my DVR. I recommend Hanami Sushi without any hesitation.

Amazing how you find the best sushi places when you least expect it. This place was great. Try the Toro. Excellent. Great service, cold Sapporo's, and good prices.

Whenever in Richmond, this is definitely my go-to sushi restaurant (and I've tried almost all of them). We went earlier today and I ordered the sashimi appetizer with all salmon pieces, and the avocado salad. Both were really great, the sashimi was fresh and was a perfect amount, and it was a great price too. I've also had some of their rolls in the past and all were great!

My husband and I had to check this place out because of the rave reviews. I have to say, it was great!!! We enjoyed the rolls and the homemade soy sauce (I'd be shocked if it wasn't). We will be back as we eat sushi once a week at least. The wait was a little long for our food, but that was okay since we sat outside and enjoyed the nice weather. You guys rock!

Overall good. I had the Super Spicy Roll. It didnt really WOW me. Kitchen kind of slow. And Not crowded for a friday lunch hour.

Perhaps it was because we came in closer to closing time, but my girlfriend and I not likely to ever go here again. Especially with so many other options around. The pricing is about the same as every other sushi place, but the atmosphere feels a bit cheap and what we ordered seemed closer to the quality of sushi I could buy at a Kroger pre-made for half the price vs. what I would expect at any sushi place. Since we hadn't been before we went with our typical orders of a Philadelphia and a spicy tuna roll. Neither was really bad, but nothing special either. The service was good, but again nothing really stood out. Basically if we found ourselves in Innsbrooke and hungry, we are more likely going to Thai Flavor or Taziki's

I'm somewhat of a sushi snob so I was pretty excited to stumble upon Hanami Sushi especially after reading some of the great reviews. Past sushi restaurants in this area have just been ok, so I was intrigued enough to try it out for myself. Hanami is a solid 4 - 4.5 stars. It's nice that there's finally a sushi place this good with decent prices in the west end. Service is good, the location is great (for me), and parking is easy. The menu is extensive. Lots to choose from. I typically judge a sushi place based on the standard rolls. If their standard rolls can differentiate themselves from other restaurants then you know you've stumbled onto something, and that's exactly what Hanami did. I went with the spicy scallop and spicy yellowtail rolls and both were outstanding. The plates were decorated and presented as if they were specialty rolls. Lots of detail and lots of flavor. Some of the best sushi I've had in a long time! If you like sushi, you have to try this place! Thanks Yelp for the find!

It a family run enterprise with yummy food. The service is a bit slow so don't go with a hungry tummy. That said, I absolutely love their sushi and willingly forgive the wait. We eat there at least once in a month and the food quality has always been good.

I have never written a review for a restaurant but Hanami compelled me to do so and to even share a photo of their wonderful food. Hanami is an excellent place for Sushi. My husband and I are new to the area, having just moved from Minneapolis. Minneapolis has many well established Sushi joints, so finding this in a strip mall made us pass it up the first time. After coming here and reading the reviews we decided to give it a try, we were so very pleasantly surprised. From the service to the flavors we thoroughly enjoyed everything. We even had a staff member come over to ask what they could do better, what we liked and didn't like. They are really trying to establish themselves and they clearly care about what their diners think. If you go, please do not pass up the Hanami Roll. It is easily one of the best rolls my husband and I have ever eaten and we have been enjoying all kinds of sushi over the last 6 years.

I don't write many five star reviews. It takes a good bit to really impress a sista. Having said that, Hanami Sushi FULLY DESERVES this five star review. I stayed at a hotel near here while taking my niece on a college tour. Our hotel concierge gave us a brochure of nearby restaurants and the general concensus was: SUSHI!...from everyone BUT me. You see, I eat a LOT of sushi. More than your average non-japanese person, I think. I just was not in the mood for it. But being the kind-hearted gentle soul that I am, I went along with the other 3 in my party. I was a little skeptical when we found out this spot was new. That could either be a hit or a miss. We walked in to find the place empty, save for one couple nibbling on their edamame, while gazing passionately into each others' eyes...I almost walked right back out! But, I knew it was getting kinda late in this foreign town and plus, I didn't want to be labeled a 'party pooper'. So, we sat and ordered our meals. The menu was quite extensive featuring some pretty creative rolls. I was pleasantly surprised, but still skeptical. While waiting on our meal, we lightly chatted and snapped pics for my niece's photo journal of her trip. After a while, the couple rose to leave. Their sudden loud outburst of raving reviews and compliments to the chef was off-putting at first, but then I realized, we were in for a treat. I was so happy I was a team player that night. Some of the best sushi my mouth has ever encountered...My fave: The Volcano Roll. Perfect!

Our favorite sushi restaurant in Richmond! So fresh and very creative, the staff is friendly and attentive. Service is quick and the restaurant is always clean and quiet. Our favorite roll is the passion! You will love it!

Dinner was vastly better, and it really made me happy to know that the internet hype machine wasn't totally off-base. I need you, internet hype machine, though... I wish I could quit you. I've been back five or six times,* and while it's not my favorite sushi in the area, it's quick, affordable, quiet, and consistently delicious. Their nigiri is good and the rolls are quite lovely, but the highlights are probably the tai with garlic oil and the tako su appetizer. * I had to be sure, you know? All in the name of duty.

Amazing taste, price and service. My husband and I come about once a week and are never disappointed. The fish is always very fresh, the service prompt, and the restaurant/bathrooms clean. This is the best (and most consistent) sushi in the Richmond area. I was leery to try a sushi joint in a strip mall, but I am so glad I did! Try it as soon as you can, and be sure to order a salad with their amazing ginger dressing!!! (Favorite rolls? Spicy beach and super spicy!!!)

I took my two kids to Hanami Sushi on a recent trip and it was definitely a big step above similar places. We knew we were in for a treat when the miso soup and the seaweed salad were much better than any we've had. I had sushi which was impeccably prepared and complemented with homemade soy sauce. My son had delicious stir fried soba noodles and my daughter had very good vegetable tempura which was much better than our local restaurant. They both thought that even the rice that accompanied the tempura was great. If I lived in the area, I would definitely make this a favorite.

I lived in NYC for three years. I went to numerous sushi joints there. I think that Hanami sushi holds its own against some of the more expensive NYC sushi establishments I graced with my presence. I found the sushi rolls at Hanami to be fresh and flavorful. It also didn't hurt that the pieces are definitely bigger than at Sushi Samurai. I also like how the sushi bar is set in the back of the restaurant, which makes it more difficult for me to hear the sushi chef slicing and dicing. The waitstaff is friendly and cordial. While this isn't really good for the restaurant, I like how it's never crowded. It makes MY experience more enjoyable.

Hanami Sushi has a very unpretentious and casual atmosphere. The sushi menu is extensive as is there regular menu. I've gone on several occasions for dinner and have always been pleased with my appetizer and sushi rolls. The fish is fresh and the presentation is beautiful. I would highly recommend this restaurant as a benchmark sushi establishment.

What could be better than fresh sushi on a cold snowy day in Virginia's capital city. Visited today with my wife and kids just after lunch for a quick bite to tide us over until supper. The kids loved the chicken yakatori and gyoza fried dumplings. And my wife and I shared the Norfolk roll an order of Maguro and the Kani salad. The establishment was clean and everything was extremely fresh and tasted great. The atmosphere was quiet and service was good as well. I couldn't really find anything I didn't like. The one thing I noted was that the vegetables and fish were not only fresh, but nice and cold. That's nice when you have a specialty roll that has hot and cold elements to it. I don't see that everywhere, so it's something I remember. Definitely a keeper.

This is my first review ever - so you know it had to be either a really awful or really amazing experience...happy to report it was the latter. Normally I frequent the same ole sushi spots, but today I remember seeing this sushi place near my favorite Mexican restaurant. When I got inside, I was seated immediately...it was lunch time so be aware the place gets pretty packed during the week. The interior was pretty simple, but the atmosphere was casual and inviting.Given there were only two waitresses, it took about 10ish minutes to put the order in, but the service was very pleasant and efficient once our order was placed. I got the 'Super Spicy Lunch Box' which included salad, soup, super spicy roll and spicy california roll, Shumai, and fruit. Everything was delicious - the food was fresh and the portions were perfect. The presentation was deliberate yet simple - I loved everything about this place and it's by far my favorite Japanese restaurant in the area. Looking forward to my next visit - which will likely be scheduled for sometime next week :)

The fish in the chirashi was not that good. Same quality as low end buffets around the city. Expensive, so did not get my money's worth oin that order. ($20++) However, the rolls are good. Ordered mcarthur and dragon roll. Very tasty, would order again. Rating would be higher, but it also took forever for the dishes to come out. There were only 3 tables with customers, so cant be a busy night. Not sure if I want to go back.

This is a quickie review... let me first say that if you are anywhere near as prissy as I am this place can seem a little scary because its in a strip mall...but I gave it a chance while hanging with friends and the food erased the evil thought of eating at a strip mall. Get the lunch specials-saves money (ends at 4pm) I have been here numerous times and the food has been consistent! this is HUGE...consistency is *muah* So in this small review, I will conclude: Good and consistent sushi! The End

The Sushi just melted in my mouth... When I tasted The white tuna roll, I was in complete bliss.... If Sushigeddon ever came to Richmond, I can proudly say that "I tasted the best Sushi in town"

Been to Hanami several more times and had the sashimi. All were high quality fish, but rather small portions. Time before last when I visited I was given whitefish on my sashimi platter which I didn't care for. The white fish had no flavor and was excessively cold (as in maybe thawing out). I recently went again and again there was whitefish on my platter. It wasn't thawing out, but again on this visit, the whitefish had no flavor.

Really cool place. Went there tonight with our little one, who was mesmerized by the lit lanterns in the ceiling that change color over and over, as well as calmed by the music (we all felt strangely zen-like upon leaving due to the music). I had the Tornado roll based on fellow Yelpers recccomendations - it was delicious! I also enjoyed the volcano roll (see pic I posted of both). The miso soup is really flavorful as well. We will definitely return! So great to have another GREAT sushi place in RVA. I want this place to succeed!

I have been through this area many times but never saw Hanami Sushi. After reading the reviews we felt compelled to try it out. WOW. Loved everything we had. Pork Gyoza - cooked perfectly and very tasty. Seaweed salad - very fresh with a nice dose of sesame flavor made it delicious. Sake Sashimi was melt in your mouth fresh. New Orleans roll had a great spice to it - the eel sauce was perfect. Norfolk roll is topped with a spicy may sauce - amazing. A little pricy was the only reason 4 instead of 5 stars. $50 for two people, no drinks, no desert.

My husband and I are sushi fanatics and last night was one of those nights when the craving just hit. We just don't get the whole "specialty" roll thing and always order some kind of sushi sashimi combo. Well due to all the great ratings here, we decided to check the place out. We got the pork gyoza (pork dumplings) and really appreciated that they also pan seared them after steaming. When our sushi deluxe combo came out, we started to get concerned. One bite of the salmon and we realized everything was too cold and there was just too much lemon on the platter. The problem with the fish being too cold is that you just can't taste it. Every bite of the nigiri and sashimi was lemon and soy. Also the nigiri did not have any wasabi in it. The hubs is a stickler for properly made nigiri. All i could taste of the "spicy tuna roll" was rice and crunchy bits. We both walked out of there disappointed and $70 poorer.

They have the best sushi around. Great staff and lunch prices are great. This place is a must go to spot for all of your sushi needs. If sushi is not what you want than one of the main entree's will def. hit spot. They also have green tea ice cream which is very good. The salads here though, have the BEST Ginger Dressing around. 100% homemade and they also sell it by the quart if you want some for at home!!!

MMMMMMmmmmm. This place is delicious! We ordered the sashimi entree, blackjack roll and rainbow roll. All were yummy but my favorite was definitely the blackjack. The sashimi was beautiful, thick cuts of delightfully fresh fish. We sat on the patio, which was lovely as the night was warm. Our server was attentive even though we were out of sight. Everything we had was very, very good and I would definitely recommend this place!

Hanami is legit!! This is my favorite sushi place in Richmond area by far and I eat sushi once a week! Quality is fantastic. They make their own soy sauce and I think it makes the sushi that much better. Easter roll is like nothing I've ever had before. Really incredible!

This is my other go-to place for sushi in Short Pump and in Richmond overall. They have a great selection and wonderful lunch deals. The service is outstanding and I enjoy everything I've ever had. They are always packed at lunch, so I'd be interested to go there during dinner. They are located among a whole bunch of lackluster restaurants/bars. I'm looking at you Beach House, Sharky's, etc. I hope they stay open because they are great!

A lot of the reviewers on Yelp recommended the Hanami Roll and I have to say - it was excellent. The service is also terrific. The presentation was also very beautiful. The only reason I rate it a 4 instead of a 5 is that I felt the sashimi was too cold, almost icy, and seemed to get in the way of the flavor. It was explained to us why they kept it so cold, but I don't think I have ever had it this cold.

I stopped by Hanami Sushi very late at night, near closing time around 10PM and the wait staff was still attentive and the service was quick. I ordered the sashimi deluxe and the quality was on par with my expectations albeit pricy at $21. The store is owned and run by mainland chinese people and is cozy in unintrusive. The meal came with a miso soup was that from regular stock and a small salad with sweet and sour dressing. While the food was fresh and the service was great, I noticed that they had used jasmine rice (cheaper) over the conventional short grain sweet rice (expensive). Overall, a nice place to chill and get your sushi fix.

Fantastic flavor with Nigiri sushi. Great Sushi Chief. Very good waiting staff. Food came fast. Location is right off Broad St and near 64, 288 and 295. I ordered more tuna and eel Nigiri sushi. Highly recommend this place. I do not live in Richmond so this find was greatly appreciated.

I have to admit that I was skeptical of all the five-star reviews of a strip center sushi place but I'm so glad I came. Was meeting with a group from work and we all have fallen in love with this wonderful restaurant. I got the Hanami Appetizer which was a beautiful blend of flavors and fresh fish. Luckily, it didn't spoil my appetite for my entree, the Hanami Roll ... an incredibly wonderful combination with a balsamic dressing which I've never seen paired with sushi but it worked extremely well. They even brought the table a couple of Volcano rolls gratis. I normally don't care for deep-fried rolls but this was prepared very well. All six at our table said they'd be back!

  • Patti S S.

Ordered 4 rolls with a friend and ours were so much white rice and very little fish we found ourselves picking off all of the rice. Rolls are more expensive than most places and if you want brown rice instead it is $2 extra which doesn't seem like a lot but with 4 rolls that is $8 more for brown versus white rice. I don't believe the other reviews on here. After eating in almost every sushi and asian restaurant within a 100 mile radious of Richmond VA, I think this is one of the worst! My salmon tasted fishy. Go to MISO right around the corner for fresher sushi. Hanami is not good.

I love sushi and this is probably my favorite sushi in the area. It's never crowded, which can feel awkward if you're the only one there. But don't let that keep you from trying out their food. The fish is the freshest around and perfectly chilled. I had the Sashimi entree and it basically turned me on to salmon sashimi which I never really cared for before. It's so fresh and delicious I want it now. The rolls are all really interesting and tasty as well. But I love this place for fresh delicious fish.

Visited Hanami Sushi once again and was more than happy to find that the sushi is still as good as it was the last time I went. Got the blackjack roll this time, and it was very delicious and I recommend it if you like a good eel/avocado roll kinda like a dragon roll but better. Also got the sushi/sashimi combo, and the fish was extremely fresh and very excellent. My favorite this time was the salmon and yellowtail. Their sushi/sashimi combo is my favorite in the Richmond area because they give you just good fish and don't add any weird egg custard things or fake crab sticks (which I hate). Loved the spicy tuna roll as usual, it is still my favorite because they give you alot of tuna in the roll with just a bit of crunch, and I feel like a lot of places try to skimp you on the tuna. Also got the gyoza which were fantastic because they steam them then pan fry, which is very light and delicious. Overall, my family and I are still very satisfied with Hanami, and we all think more people need to try it out!!!

Amazingly fresh sushi at great prices, my fiancée and I were so impressed with this new laid back sushi restaurant in glen Allen. Customer service was great as well. I normally eat at Hanami when I'm in town. My hotel is around the corner. The sushi is really fresh and good. Based on one of the reviews, I tried the tornado roll and it was quite delicious. Only one more day in town but I'll definitely be back next time I'm here.

Went yesterday for lunch and it was awesome! My friends and I have sushi-hopped all around the West End on our lunch breaks.. THIS is my new sushi place. The food was great, prices were great, staff was great. I don't understand why the place isn't packed! I really, really hope this restaurant succeeds. I can't say enough great things about it!
